Alas, stores are putting their summer inventories on the clearance racks and making room for new fall shipments—which means we’re also making room for new purchases. We’ve reached that point in the season where temperatures can be annoyingly low in the mornings but gradually increase as the day goes on. However, when the weather isn’t conducive to wearing chunky knits, heavy blazers, or camel coats (at least not during the day), we’re left with the dreaded question everyone faces at one point or another: What do I wear today?
To help you avoid that quandary, here are WITW’s top 5 transitional pieces to add to your wardrobe right now:
1. The Trench Coat
Trench Coat: & Other Stories (similar here)
I wouldn’t be a style blogger if I didn’t mention the beloved trench coat. And as much as I feel like I’m hopping on the bandwagon by saying this, they really are vital in curating the perfect layered outfit. Pop it over your favorite white t-shirt and high-waisted denim for those brisk September mornings, and strip layers when that brisk air turns stuffy by the afternoon.
2. The White Tee
Speaking of a white t-shirt, that’s another classic piece perfect for any climate. Your outfit is all in how you style it. Worn under a light sweater, cardigan or denim jacket, you have three (very easy) chic looks. It’s all about layering this time of year.
3. The Loafer
Jeans: GRLFRND Denim
Once again, many bloggers can attest to the fact that loafers are an absolute staple in any transitional wardrobe. In fact, I decided to invest in a pair of Gucci Princetown mules last fall for that exact reason. They’ve easily been my most-worn shoes throughout every season; the cost-per-wear absolutely makes them worth the price. With that said, you certainly don’t need to spend a lot—there are plenty of inexpensive dupes out there like the Sam Edelman Lior Loafer. GEEDIAR makes another pair that look incredibly similar to the Gucci Princetowns, but for a fraction of the price.
4. The Shacket
I’m currently going through a bit of a shacket (combination shirt/jacket garment) obsession at the moment. You can’t go wrong with throwing it over a tee or lacy cami, depending on the vibe of wherever you’re going. Topshop is my go-to place for all things shacket. They kill it every time. Zara and H&M also have some great options at unbeatable price points.
5. The Little Black Bag
No wardrobe is complete without a good bag. As we start switching out our printed dresses for neutral basics, it’s essential to have a trusty bag option that pairs nicely with any outfit. Black is always a safe color choice, however, you can’t go wrong with a deep brown. I’ve been loving this Staud Clothing Shirley Bag and look forward to wearing it more as the season changes.
